Before making changes
Start with safe, useful checks
- Identify the exact Mac model and macOS version from About This Mac.
- Make a current Time Machine or other verified backup before recovery work.
- Install compatible macOS updates through System Settings rather than download sites.
- Use Apple Diagnostics when startup or hardware symptoms persist.
Do not install a BIOS or firmware file unless the exact model matches, the manufacturer’s instructions are clear, important data is backed up, and stable power is available. Interrupting firmware installation can leave a device unable to start.
