Before making changes
Start with safe, useful checks
- Run Windows Update and install applicable optional updates before manual driver packages.
- Identify the exact Surface model in Settings or the Surface app.
- Disconnect accessories and test the original power supply when diagnosing charging or startup.
- Back up files and save the BitLocker recovery key before reset or recovery work.
Do not install a BIOS or firmware file unless the exact model matches, the manufacturer’s instructions are clear, important data is backed up, and stable power is available. Interrupting firmware installation can leave a device unable to start.
