Before making changes
Start with safe, useful checks
- Find the Service Tag on the case or in BIOS so you receive model-specific files.
- Run Windows Update first, including applicable optional driver updates.
- Use Dell preboot diagnostics when the computer reports a hardware error or will not start normally.
- Connect AC power and back up important files before BIOS or firmware changes.
Do not install a BIOS or firmware file unless the exact model matches, the manufacturer’s instructions are clear, important data is backed up, and stable power is available. Interrupting firmware installation can leave a device unable to start.
